Gently Out of Time: Paintings

Post last edited on 28th April 2026

In 2021 I made a photobook titled ‘Gently Out of Time’ and had just one coffee table-sized copy printed. It contained over fifty pairs of photographs selected from the 17000 stored on my laptop and phone. Each pair of photographs were chosen because, for one reason or another, they felt like they belonged together, despite being taken at different times and in different places. It was a good effort, but it wasn’t right.

My intention had always been to reevaluate the first book and produce a second version, but I decided first to scrutinise the photographs more intensely by making paintings of them. To date, I have painted more than half of the images, and in doing so, have continually discovered more about each one. With a deeper understanding of the images, and what might have compelled me to take the photographs in the first place, in 2026 I edited the photobook, changed it’s format to a smaller size, and published a limited edition of thirty copies.
