W2: Cubo Futurism

Update: Work produced in class has been added below.

The workshop I’ve planned for week 2 of the autumn term is titled, ‘Cubo Futurism’. It was inspired by the first room of the current Royal Academy exhibition, ‘In the eye of the storm: Modernism in Ukraine, 1900–1930s‘. I’d recommend going to see it if you can.

Cubo Futurism, is described by the RA as a style of art that included the ‘geometric fragments of cubism, the energy and movement of futurism, and the colours of Ukrainian folk art.’ There’s a learning resource for Cubism on this website and the Tate Gallery gives an introduction to Futurism here.

If you are coming to class next week, or you plan to visit the exhibition, I’d recommend doing a bit of research first. Start by listening to BBC Front Row’s podcast (ff: 17m 28s), then explore the exhibition audio guide, and then there’s the quick read; ’Six Ukrainian artists you should know’.

A quick note about entry costs at the RA. With general admission at £15 + £2 donation (under 16s can go free), and all other concessions at £11, it’s really worth looking into getting a friends card if you are likely to visit regularly. Friends cards allow you to visit as often as you like, take a guest each time, and you’ll receive four copies of their excellent magazine every year.
