W3 Spring term lesson: Bacon

I’ve just delivered two painting classes in the studio, inspired by the Francis Bacon triptych portraits I saw recently at the National Portrait Gallery.

I’ve included some photographs from the exhibition below, followed by a few links to Bacon and Soho things I’ve enjoyed watching in the past few days and finally, some of the outcomes from the classes.

  • A good, honest conversation with Bacon on the Southbank Show. Scroll down to the bottom of this page where you will find the film in six parts. Don’t be put off by the strange editing at the start!
  • A nice three minute documentary about the Colony Rooms, where Bacon was paid £10 a week to bring in his friends (and have free drinks).
  • And for a bit more of Soho, over to Suggs.
  • And finally, something nice to know: Jack Vettriano selected Bacon’s ‘Triptych May-June’ for his luxury item on Desert Island Discs.

Some of the class outcomes:

Having investigated the work of Francis Bacon, students produced their own work in response.
