I’ve just finished a tricky oil painting of the sun rising over Paris, viewed through a dirty, scratched hotel window, with reflections on, in La Defence.
First layer of paint applied to block in the composition. Experimented with colour mixing. Blotted off excess liquid with newsprint.Second layer of paint (more buttery). Added contrast and some texture. Confirmed position of features. (Annoying shadow at top from easel).Worked in small abstract areas, mostly in the sky and middle section. Focused on textures and details.Developed the lower section, then repeatedly swept over the whole work, adding and removing brushmarks, until the painting gave back to me what I originally wanted to achieve.
