I don’t feel that I’ve kept up very well with all things art in the media and galleries last week. Here are some of the things from my list, some that I have seen and some that I plan to see:
I made it to the Expressionist exhibition at Tate Modern last week and thoroughly enjoyed it. I’m looking forward still to seeing Sargent at the Tate Britain and Caravaggio at the National Gallery.
The new portrait of King Charles by Jonathan Yeo is hanging at Philip Mould Gallery on Pall Mall until June 14th. Will you be popping in to see it? I haven’t seen it in real life but I like what I’ve seen online. It was good to see Insight teacher and art critic Estelle Lovatt talking about it on Talk TV the other day.
I enjoyed this article about Ryan McGinley’s photographs on show as part of the new exhibition of Elton John’s photography collection at the V and A, and listening to some of the Frieze Masters Podcasts that Tabish Khan mentioned in his recent newsletter.
Some other podcasts to try are the Slate Culture Gabfest podcast recommended by artist Elise Mendelle and Art Juice recommended by artist Sara Gregory. My favourites for artists to follow are This Cultural Life and Desert Island Discs.
I haven’t looked into the new series about Rob Rinder and Rylan Clark on the Grand Tour looking at art from Venice to Rome, following in the footsteps of Lord Byron. Will it be watchable? By all accounts it’s not too bad and in my opinion, anything that spreads the joy of looking at art is a good thing.
And finally, I’ve been recommended to watch a BBC series with Michael Palin too, including this one on the Art of Hammershoi.
