Film: Fantastic Machine

I really enjoyed watching the film Fantastic Machine the other week. It takes viewers on a journey through the evolution of the photograph and the moving image, from the first exciting moment of seeing ourselves printed on paper and the first live television broadcast, to people dangling their friends off skyscrapers to get more people to subscribe to their youtube channel and increase their advertising revenue.

It’s a film that makes you laugh out load, usually at totally inappropriate moments.

I’m very interested in how images connect with people. Last year I played with an idea I called ‘Instantism’, asking the question on Instagram: ‘Has the split second judgement of art on screens led to a movement of instantly eye-catching work?’. I’m also interested in the relationship between images on our phone and memory. Recent paintings I’ve made touched on this, but it’s only a start.
